Joe Kilcoyne is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 134 out of Chicago, IL where he served his apprenticeship. Joe spent 20 years in the field as an inside wireman from Apprentice, Journeyman, Foreman, General Foreman, and Superintendent before taking on his current roles. He currently serves as a Business Representative with IBEW Local 134 as well as the Treasurer and a Trainer for the Illinois IBEW Renewable Energy Fund and an Adjunct Professor at Triton College. Joe's focus in the electrical industry is with renewable energy technologies and electrical construction safety. He works with current Local 134 members as well as people entering a career in the electrical field such as high school students, those seeking a career change, and individuals from community programs. He has a passion towards inclusivity and works towards building a diverse membership through the apprenticeship program. In addition, he works with allied professionals such as building and fire departments who have a stake in these systems including proper construction and safety concerns responding to sites that have incorporated renewable technologies. Joe’s focus on renewable work includes a whole system’s thinking approach in which we address overall complexities and the process in which we transition to a renewable energy future. This transition presents an opportunity to address injustices and create a future based on renewable energy, environmental care, community engagement, and a just transition.
